IFEGI-OKU (WEEK 05) - "The Song" Part 1 of 3

WEEK 5 – THE SONG, Part 1 of 3

The Old Woman cradles the new girl-child
Little One follows closely behind
Holding the lantern above her head
To light the way through the dark marsh lands

They head to the edge of the whole wide world
Where the Great Water playfully laps the land
Then withdraws and comes to do it again
Season after season, year after year

Little One marvels at life’s unknowns
To be close to death and yet far now
There’s Big Mother trudging ahead
Her steps strong, as if a young maid

The Old Woman’s callused and cracked feet
Step measuredly on the dusty ground
She hums to the baby softly cooing
A stirring tune from within her heart

The sound of waves crashing on rocks
Salt-water smell wafts through the air
The bushes give way to a great wide clearing
And there, the dark water hugging the land

The Old Woman sniffs the salty air
As she rocks the girl-child in her arms
The woman opens up and begins to howl
A sound that startles Little One to death

"Do not be afraid, my dear Little One.
The woman you see is not mad today.
Prepare to remember all I shall sing.
To you shall I entrust this child’s legacy."

"What are you saying, dear Big Mother?
This thing you speak of cannot be done.
A legacy is that which one leaves behind.
Tis not foretold afore a life is lived."

The Old Woman walks to the water’s hands
Forcing Little One to follow behind
She watches the elder touch the sand
With a finger scoops out a depth of sand

"Great mysteries abound, my dear Little One.
The Gods speak to us all the time, you know.
’Tis they who whisper all this child shall do.
That’s how I am able to sing you her song."
