IFEGI-OKU (WEEK 09) - "The New Wife" Part 2 of 3
WEEK 9 – THE NEW WIFE, Part 2 of 3

Obi casts an angry stare upon the Old Man
Whom he is certain is speaking untruth
He distinctly recalls that twenty years before
Daughter Number Three had wed before Two

The Old Man chews his kola-nut impassively
Though he keeps his small eyes pinned upon Obi
Obi, for his part, detects a smirk – creeping
At the corners of the old man's chapped lips

"Is your older daughter as pretty as this here?"
"She is more beautiful than this small one here."
"Call her out then for my own eyes to behold."
"Ije, go and fetch your sister from the kitchen."

Ije-oma runs off nearly tripping in her haste
To be gone from Obi's threatening eyes
Something about him makes her run, want to hide
As shivers of ice race up her bare chest

The Old Man continues to chew his kola-nut
Speaking quietly about some girl in a tree
Obi grows impatient and rudely ignores him
His eyes at the door his new bride would emerge

Soon, a dragging sound slowly approaches
Distinct yet mysterious, it's very hard to place
The air in the hut seems suddenly to vanish
When Obi realizes 'tis he who holds his breath

For standing at the door the sun itself in glory
The man's elder girl her very eyes bewitching
Obi fights the urge to rape her in the parlor
So he grips the edge of the stool he's sitting on

"Come here", he whispers, his very heart pounding
But the girl maintains her spot against the door
"Come forward!" Obi thunders, ready to burst
The heat between his legs rising to his head

The girl pushes off from off the door jam
Her eyes made pregnant by the weight of her tears
She takes a step forward – there's the sound again!
From the thinned and useless limb she drags along

Obi's chair falls back as he stares on in horror
His future bride drags on a shriveled dead leg!
The whole world stops, including all sounds
Except her father saying, "She fell from a tree,

"As a little girl, when the locusts descended,
Darkening the sky and made it look like night.
I do not agree that girls should climb trees.
Only Fortune's blessings we did not lose her."

"She might as well be dead!" Obi roars then curses
"For a girl who is lame has no use at all to me.
No wonder she still lives in her father's dirt house.
No man will be caught dead with a limp in his bed!"
