IFEGI-OKU (WEEK 14) - "The Rain Falls in Torrents" Part 1 of 3 |
WEEK 14 – THE RAIN FALLS IN TORRENTS, Part 1 of 3
The rain falls in torrents …
… on this fateful day when Fourth Wife Makes good her father's words to Obi The heavens simply part and out pours water In sheets of silver and weight of gold
People run for cover – including the goats The chickens and cows and birds and snails The rain rips the branches off cowering trees And turns shallow gutters into raging streams
In every household in Imo-che Children run outside to lift the heavy lids Off earthenware pots that catch nvene Fresh, drinking water falling from the sky
*Amadiora's lightening bolts trace the sky One falls to earth and finds Obi's yard With a thunderous clap that deafens the village It splits the forever-standing tree right in half
At that very moment, Wife Number Four – Not having any children (yet) to do the task – Is standing by her hut, the lid in her hands When the mighty tree's spirit is split in half
The lid hits the ground as she doubles over She bites down her lips to keep from crying out The custom in her village forbids any woman From screaming out loud in the midst of bearing child
About to uncover the pot for her mother Ifegi-oku gapes at the splintered tree Whose mighty strength had pricked her back She bows her head at Nature's awful wrath
A sudden movement catches her eyes She beholds Number Four writhing on the ground Dropping the lid, she darts through the rain God's cool downpour pounding her skin
She cradles Number Four's head on her lap The woman's clammy forehead burns to the touch She strokes gently the woman's belly next And feels the kicking turmoil raging within
