IFEGI-OKU (WEEK 18) - "Bundles of Joy," Part 1 of 2
WEEK 18 – BUNDLES OF JOY, Part 1 of 2

Obi tosses off his numerous farm tools
He flies through the farm as though he is winged
So overpowering is the feeling in his heart
The chorus from His Fathers fills his ears

"You are one among us - fly, Obi, fly!
Lift up your son to the heavenly skies!"
Picking up the tools is Chidi's father
Osé-nékwo, translated - "pepper speaks"

Obi wastes no time unlatching his gate
He scales the fence around his yard
Rushes to Number Four's stuffed hut-mouth
Shoving curious neighbors out of his way

The air in the hut completely overwhelms
Filled with unease, clammy to his skin
The faces around him refuse his eyes
He sees in them a different shade of grief

For held in the arms of his tired Four
Two infants - BOYS! - one each at her side
Their tiny manhoods standing straight
Baptizing the hut with their first clear piss

Obi shuts his eyes for this cannot be
He opens them again - still there are two
His own face really, replicated twice
These surely then are sons from his loins

Obi turns around and screams at the crowd
A curdling shriek, filled pain and terror
Their arms raised, a plea to The Gods,
They scatter outside, away from him

Osé is the only one among them who stays
The pride in his face sliding to ache
To behold his friend shrieking with craze
A pitiful cry of the injustice of it all

A life-long desire glimpsed on the path
A life-long desire just over yonder
About to cradle the gift in your hand
The desire is dashed in a mockery of two!

Wife Number Four begins to cry
Her tears washing over her two boys' heads
She readies herself for what comes next
Is surprised instead when Obi strokes her face

He buries his head against her breasts
Peeks at his sons, their cherub faces smiling
Does he have the strength to pick them up?
Does he have the heart for what he must do?
